Sun Tea 101: The Right Glass Dispenser Size (and How Long to Brew)
Share
Sun tea is the easiest drink of summer: tea bags, water, glass vessel, sunshine, done. The two questions everyone asks: what size dispenser, and how long in the sun? Quick answers: a 1-gallon glass vessel covers a family for the day (8 standard tea bags, 3–4 hours in full sun), and for parties scale to 2 gallons or more.
The size math
1 gallon = 10–12 cups. The everyday size: family dinner, porch afternoons, your personal iced-tea habit. A 1 gallon round dispenser with spigot means the tea brews and serves in the same vessel — no transfer, no extra pitcher.
1.5 gallons = 15–18 cups. The brunch-and-cookout size when one gallon empties too fast. See the 1.5 gallon round.
2+ gallons = 20–30 cups. Parties, showers, and reunions. The 2 gallon dispenser or a decorative 2.5 gallon Moroccan covers a crowd per fill.
No spigot needed? A 1 gallon wide-mouth mason jar is the classic sun tea jar — brew with the lid resting loosely on top, then refrigerate in the same jar.
How to brew it (and the safety rule)
The ratio: 2 standard tea bags per quart, so 8 bags per gallon. Fill with cold water, set in direct sun, and pull it at 3–4 hours maximum — longer doesn't make stronger tea, it makes bitter tea, and food-safety guidance says don't let it linger warm. Refrigerate immediately after brewing, drink within 24 hours, and wash the vessel between batches. Glass matters here: it sanitizes completely and won't hold yesterday's tea flavor the way plastic does.
Make it interesting
Black tea is traditional, but green tea + mint, hibiscus + lime, and half tea/half lemonade all brew beautifully in the sun. Add sliced citrus or herbs to the dispenser after brewing, when the tea goes over ice — they stay bright instead of stewing.
